Woman Finds 'Psycho, Crazy!!' Comments On Prescription
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Palm Beach, Fla., woman is suing Walgreens.
Janey Karp said that when she picked up a prescription she found an extra message attached in the section reserved for patient information -- "CrAzY!!"
The 53-year-old also said the prescription she picked up last week for the sleep aid Ambien also said, "She's really a psycho!!! Do not say her name too loud, never mention her meds by names & try to talk to her when ... " The information continued onto another page but was not attached.
"I was devastated, humiliated and embarrassed," Karp said. "I honestly couldn't speak. I was trembling."
Karp is suing the retail chain for defamation, negligent supervision and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Karp told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that when she lived in Connecticut, she asked Walgreens employees there to be discreet when discussing her medications. She told the paper that the pharmacy workers would often call her name loudly and talk openly about her medications.
A spokeswoman for the Illinois-based chain said the incident is being investigated.
"The Drug Utilization Review (DUR) includes a notes field intended for the pharmacist to use to enter reminders and patient requests," company spokeswoman Carol Hively said. "We want to ensure that our pharmacy employees are acting in a proper and professional manner so we are looking into this matter."
She said the notes field is intended for internal use as a private reminder for the pharmacist
The newspaper reported Karp said that when she was younger, she self-medicated herself with alcohol and drugs.
She was sober for eight years before relapsing and is nearing the two-year mark of being sober again, according to the paper. Karp said that after the incident, she struggles to sleep and is worried.
"I'm thinking they're thinking here comes psycho, that they're laughing at me as I come in the store," she said. "I had enough trouble picking these [medications] up in the first place."
Karp's attorney, Cathy Lively, said her client is not psychotic nor insane, but the inference is there.
Lively told the paper that countless other Walgreens customers could unknowingly have the same types of notes in their accounts as Karp.
"There (are) a lot of medications with stigmas and sensitivities," Lively said. "A man taking Viagra, what are they going to be labeled? Do you want slanderous, derogatory comments put in the system?"
