POLITICAL HUMOR

"He was only in Afghanistan for four hours. That may not sound like much, but it's more time than Bush spent in the Texas National Guard." - --Jay Leno

"President Bush made a surprise trip to Afghanistan, and he promised the Afghanis that the United States would not cut and run. Then he got on his plane and left." - --Conan O'Brien

"Earlier today, President Bush flew to New Orleans. There was an awkward moment when the president looked around and said 'Oh my god, what the hell happened here?'" - --Conan O'Brien

"In his acceptance speech, George Clooney said he was proud to be out of touch, and today George Bush said, 'Hey, me too.'" - --Jay Leno

"President Bush says America has caused an incredible transformation in Afghanistan. He said everything's being rebuilt, people are getting jobs, kids are going back to school. He said it works so well that he's thinking of trying it in New Orleans." - --Jay Leno

"President Bush was also in Pakistan. Which is a little scary. When they landed there they landed in the dark with the lights off and all the shades pulled down. So if you count the Dubai deal, that's the second time President Bush has been operating in the dark." - --Jay Leno

"Plans were announced to raise $300 million for the George W. Bush Presidential Library. $300 million. That's almost $150 million per book." - --Jay Leno

"President Bush got off the plane in Pakistan and said, 'Pakistan is a force for freedom in the Arab world.' Only problem there is Pakistan is not free and they're not Arab. ... Earlier in the week he referred to the people of India as Native Americans." - --Bill Maher

"When he was in India he saw a woman with the red dot on her head. He thought she had been hunting with Cheney." - Bill Maher

"This week President Bush made a surprise visit to Afghanistan. The president said he heard it was a good place for an embattled leader to disappear into the mountains." - --Tina Fey

"On the port deal, a lot of Republican congressmen are saying let's not rush to judgment, let's investigate it and be sure of our facts. Gee, too bad they didn't try that before we invaded Iraq." - --Jay Leno

"Another embarrassing moment for President Bush. On his energy tour, they asked him about alternative fuels. Bush said, 'What, oil's gay?'" - --Jay Leno

George Bush has a heart attack and dies. Obviously, he goes to Hell, where the Devil is waiting for him.
"I'm not sure what to do," says the Devil. "you're on my list, but I have no room for you.
But since you definitely have to stay here, I am going to have to let someone else go. "I've got three folks here who weren't quite as bad as you. I'll let one of them go, but you'll have to take their place. I'll even let you decide who leaves." George thought that sounded pretty good, so he agreed.
The Devil opened the first room. In it was Richard Nixon and a large pool of water. He kept diving in and climbing out, over and over. Such was his fate in Hell.
"No!" George shouted. "I don't think so. I am not a good swimmer, And I don't think I could
do that all day long".
The Devil led him to the next room. In it was Tony Blair with a sledge hammer and a room full of rocks. All he did was swing the hammer, over and over, time after time.
"No! I've got this problem with my shoulder, I would be in constant agony if all I could do was breaks rocks all day", commented George.
The Devil opened the third door. In it, George saw Bill Clinton Lying on the floor with his arms staked over his head, and his legs staked in a spread-eagle pose.
Bent over him was Monica Lewinsky doing what she does best.
George Bush looked at this in disbelief for a while and finally said, "Yeah, I can handle this." The Devil smiled and said "Ok, Monica, you're free to go!"

Subject: On the Bible and the Constitution
On Wednesday, March 1st, 2006, in Annapolis at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify.
At the end of his testimony, Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs said: "Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?"
Raskin replied: "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."
The room erupted into applause.

BUSH AND PRAYER
The 23rd Qualm
Bush is my shepherd; I dwell in want.
He maketh logs to be cut down in national forests.
He leadeth trucks into the still wilderness.
He restoreth my fears.
He leadeth me in the paths of international disgrace for his ego's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of pollution and war, I will find no exit, for thou art in office.
Thy tax cuts for the rich and thy media control, they discomfort me.
Thou preparest an agenda of deception in the presence of thy religion.
Thou anointest my head with foreign oil. My health insurance runneth out.
Surely megalomania and false patriotism shall follow me all the days of thy term.
And my jobless child shall dwell in my basement forever.

A man died and went to heaven. As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. He asked, "What are all those clocks?"
St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie the hands on your clock will move."
"Oh," said the man, "whose clock is that?"
"That's Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie."
"Incredible," said the man. "And whose clock is that one?"
St. Peter responded, "That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abe told only two lies in his entire life."
"Where's President Bush's clock?" asked the man.
"Bush's clock is in Jesus' office. He's using it as a ceiling fan."

A GOP faceoff over illegal immigration

I will certainly be keeping an eye on who runs for the presidency seat in 2008. As of now, Republican Senate majority leader Bill Frist is my first choice.

By Gail Russell Chaddock, Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor Wed Mar 29, 3:00 AM ET
WASHINGTON - Senate majority leader Bill Frist and GOP Sen. Sam Brownback stood together on trade, war, judges, guns, energy, abortion, and war, but they are bookends in this week's debate on "earned" amnesty for illegal aliens - the toughest issue before the Senate this year.

They illustrate the rift that runs through both parties, but especially the GOP, which controls both the House and Senate. That rift yawns so large that it could keep Congress from passing any immigration legislation this year.

Senator Frist, a prospect for a presidential run in 2008, wants a "virtual barrier" to secure borders first. It's about what it means to be a nation, he says: "A nation that can't secure its borders can't secure its destiny or administer its laws."

Senator Brownback, also a prospect for 2008, backs border security, but says he also wants a way to get 11 million undocumented people into a legalized status. It's about human dignity, he says: "One of the key measures in any society is what you do for the so-called least of these."
Polls show a strong majority of Republican voters oppose amnesty for those in the country illegally, but business groups, a core GOP constituency, want to assure a supply of low-wage workers for agriculture, construction, restaurant, and other services.

For Frist, who stumbled badly over his handling of the Terri Schiavo debacle a year ago, it's a chance to lead his party through a political mine field. "I'm here to solve problems, not stand around," he said in a statement on the floor of the Senate early Monday afternoon.

Frist had given the Senate Judiciary Committee an ultimatum: Produce a bill by end-of-day Monday, or the Senate would take up his own immigration reform plan. Brownback is one of four Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, including chairman Arlen Specter (R) of Pennsylvania, to side with Democrats in a bid for comprehensive immigration reform this session of Congress.

The Judiciary Committee's bill opens a path to citizenship for at least 11 million people living in the United States illegally. It allows those who were in the US before 2004 to get a temporary work visa, if they pay a $1,000 fine and clear a criminal background check. After six years, they would be eligible for permanent legal residence, if they learn English and pay back taxes and another $1,000 fine.

Frist's alternative, still in play, focuses exclusively on border security. That means more boots on the borders, unmanned aerial vehicles, cameras, sensors, and "a virtual barrier to cover every mile of our 1,950-mile long border with Mexico." (The House bill also includes a 700-mile wall along the southern border.)

The Frist bill also requires employers to verify the legal status of their workers, using a federal electronic database. Those employers engaging in a pattern of hiring illegal workers would face up to six months in jail. Those living in the country illegally are guilty of a misdemeanor; under the House bill, it's a felony.

Right up until the last vote late Monday afternoon, prospects for completing the complex bill looked unlikely. In the end, committee chairman Specter, as well as GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Mike DeWine of Ohio, and Brownback of Kansas lined up with all eight Democrats on the panel to complete a bill. The 12-to-6 vote electrified pro-immigration groups, who jammed the back of the Judiciary panel's hearing room.

"I'm guessing we'll get 40 Democrats and 20 to 30 Republicans who will vote for comprehensive reform," says Frank Sharry, executive director of the National Immigration Forum, a Washington advocacy group. "The idea is to get the best possible product out of the Senate, either as a prelude to a conference that goes the Senate's way - or a train wreck," he adds.
About six months ago, Mr. Sharry says he asked Brownback why, as a potential presidential candidate, he would be willing to risk alienating conservative voters, especially in Iowa, an early caucus state. "He told us, 'It's in the Bible.' He has pages of Scripture that refer to welcoming the stranger," he says.

"In all our talking to politicians, I'd never heard that," Sharry adds.

Brownback says he doesn't recall that meeting but stands by the comment. "What makes it tough is that we want to be a nation of laws," he says. "As I talk to people across Iowa, a number of people have questioned me on the immigration system. People aren't anti-immigrant, but they don't want the laws broken."

Senators on both sides of the aisle are watching the massive mobilization of immigrants, legal and illegal, in the streets of major US cities. "There is no question that what happened out in Chicago and Michigan made a big difference," said Sen. Edward Kennedy (D) of Massachusetts, a cosponsor with Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona of immigration reform that includes a path to legalization for illegals.

Frist had been gearing up for a procedural clash with Democratic leader Harry Reid, who had threatened a filibuster. Now, he must repair rifts in his own caucus.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved Monday an immigration bill that differs markedly from one passed by the House this past December. Here are key points:
• Judiciary - Illegal immigrants in the US before 2004 may work legally for six years if they pay a $1,000 fine and have no criminal record. They become eligible for permanent residence upon paying another $1,000 fine and any back taxes and learning English.
• House - Makes illegal presence in the US a felony. Requires detention of all non-Mexican illegal immigrants arrested when entering the US and mandatory sentences for those smuggling them in.
• Judiciary - Creates a pilot guest-worker program for some 1.5 million farm workers. New immigrants may obtain temporary work visas. Both groups can earn permanent residence.
• House - Does not include a guest-worker program. Requires all employers to use a database to verify Social Security numbers of employees within six years or face civil or criminal penalties.
• Judiciary - More than doubles the number of Border Patrol agents by 2011. Authorizes a "virtual wall" of unmanned vehicles, cameras, and sensors to monitor the US-Mexico border.
• House - Requires building two-layer fences along 700 miles of the 2,000-mile border between Mexico and the US.

US, Canadian soldiers die as Afghan violence surges

US, Canadian soldiers die as Afghan violence surges

KABUL (Reuters) - The Taliban attacked a military base in Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing a U.S. and a Canadian soldier and losing 32 of their own men, and declared a spring offensive had begun.

The two foreign soldiers and 12 Taliban were killed in the initial attack by a large Taliban force on the base in the southern province of Helmand, the U.S. military said.
U.S.-led forces, backed by aircraft, later attacked the Taliban forces as they were attempting to escape.

"In continuing fighting in Helmand Province, coalition forces killed 20 insurgents and destroyed two Taliban headquarters buildings," the U.S. military said in a statement.
Caches of weapons, ammunition and bomb-making material, were seized in the captured buildings and blown up, it said.

Despite the rising violence, the United States is planning to trim its force of more than 18,000 troops in Afghanistan by several thousand, while NATO partners, including Britain, Canada and the Netherlands are sending about 6,000 more.

Some British troops are already based in Helmand and up to 3,300 will soon arrive. A spokesman for the force said he had no information on whether British troops were involved in Wednesday's fighting.
The Taliban, fighting to oust foreign troops and the Western-backed government, vowed more violence.

CONFLICT HEATS UP
"The weather is warming and Taliban attacks on coalition and Afghan forces have begun," Taliban spokesman Mullah Mohammad Hanif said by telephone from an undisclosed location.
Residents of the area, speaking by phone, said there had been civilian casualties, but a U.S. military spokesman said troops had reported there had been no civilians in the Taliban compound or in surrounding villages.

"As we pursue and destroy the Taliban we expect him to lie and attempt to deflect the attention away from the fact that Taliban forces were soundly defeated," said senior U.S. commander Major General Ben Freakley.

A Taliban commander said 10 of his men were killed when a bomb or missile struck their vehicle.

A roadside bomb in the same part of Helmand killed six Afghan soldiers on Tuesday and two policemen were killed in a raid on their post in Kandahar town, also in the volatile south, security officials said.

Twelve U.S. soldiers have been killed in fighting this year. Nearly 60 Americans were killed in Afghan fighting last year, the worst for U.S. forces since they invaded in 2001 to oust the Taliban from power.

Eleven Canadian soldiers and a diplomat have been killed and 36 soldiers wounded.

Canada has 2,300 soldiers in the southern city of Kandahar, where it commands a multinational task force. As casualties have mounted some Canadians have begun questioning the mission and demanding a debate in parliament.

RIDDLE

While checking my email, some smart aleck posed a question that MADE me think! Lawd! Shame on them for seeking an answer to just one of the problems millions of Americans face.

The sagacious person writes:

"I was reading the November 05 issue of Time magazine. There was in interesting artilcle about some legislation passed by congress that will allow companies the ability stop paying into their employee pension plans. As I read further, I realized that companies are finding all kind of ways to cut costs. It appears as though the trend has now shifted to the reduction or even the elimination of employee pension plans. The scary thing is that not only does it affect future retirees but also those who have already retired. Imagine being someone who is totally dependent on their monthly pension check to survive. Then one day it's cut in half.....Or worse.....It never comes again......I know too many people who worked the 40-40-40 plan. That is to work 40 hours a week for 40 years only to retire and try to live off a pension that pays only 40% of what you struggled to live off of when you were getting 100% of it. That's sad. Now they are going to reduce or take that away.
Everyone MUST have a PLAN B! WHAT IS YOURS? "

Can you believe that question?????

Please, and I don’t even have a *hkk%gjk)ljgh answer!

I have read a similar article, and you are correct. Everyone indeed needs a Plan B. I wrecked my brain and found a few possibilities that may work for me, but not my loved ones.
I could be so fortunate to depart from this earth prior to retirement and thus my pension would not be essential to me. However, if death does not proceed, then I suppose I could work three jobs and save, but as it has been proven, that an overburdened body could lead to stress, which could lead to an early death. I could invest more, but anyone who pays attention to the market and are mere survivors of the outcome of loss, they know it does not work. Another thought would be to become a politician so that I can receive a pension for LIFE at 100%. However, that wouldn’t suit me as I believe I have a heart and care about the welfare of the people.

Good question, Repnice, but I must say that the only thing I can come up with is to get everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE to vote for the party they feel is most suitable to their current and future lifestyle.

Good question, but the only thing I can come up with, is to write your congress man/woman and DEMAND a change. The ruling must be changed, for me, you, EVERYONE! Again, it’s just another slap in the face to the working people of America.

It is surprising to me that people (myself included) haven’t taken to the streets on this issue.

GREAT QUESTION!
….are there any ANSWERS out there?

Questions for Mr. Bush (03/21/06)

Questions on March 21, 2006-President's Statements

March 21, 2006

Ladies and gentleman, we have had the pleasure in having the President of the United States in our presence. First, we must show our appreciation to Terence Hunt, AP White House Correspondent, because if it were not for him, this forum would not be possible.

As Mr. Bush speaks, the questions follow.

President Bush said Tuesday the decision about when to withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq will fall to future presidents and Iraqi leaders, suggesting that U.S. involvement will continue at least through 2008.
Mr. Bush, is this déjà vu of Vietnam? Do you even recall Vietnam and the role as well as ROLL of LBJ?

Acknowledging the public's growing unease with the war — and election-year skittishness among fellow Republicans — the president nonetheless vowed to keep U.S. soldiers in the fight.
I didn't believe we could succeed, I wouldn't be there. I wouldn't put those kids there," Bush declared.

Mr. Bush, have you ever been in a war? Not a war with the law, but live combat or ANY military fight? Would you send your legal aged children to fight in the Iraqi invasion?

He also stood by embattled Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.
"I don't believe he should resign. He's done a fine job.

Mr. Bush, does Mr. Rumsfeld have the desire to leave and if so, are you forcing him to stay to face the people for this grave mistake we are now regretting?
Mr. Bush, do you recall the soldiers on the ground inquiring for and about Mr. Rumsfeld’s resignation?

"I don't believe he should resign. He's done a fine job. Every war plan looks good on paper until you meet the enemy," he said.
Mr. Bush, I believe we have met the enemy on and off the paper.

In regards to the bloodshed in Iraq: "If I didn't believe we could succeed, I wouldn't be there. I wouldn't put those kids there," Bush declared.
Is your success so important, to have more than 209,202 victims blood on your hands? Do you know anything about war, or are you just like me, one who only KNOWS of war, but never been in the military? Have you seen the movie, "Path to War?"

Bush stood embattled Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld: "I don't believe he should resign. He's done a fine job. Every war plan looks good on paper until you meet the enemy," he said.
Mr. Bush, have you ever met the real enemy in blood-shedding battle? I suppose it looks "good on paper" or on the screen.

Mr. Bush, are you anything like your heartless mother Barbara when she said, "Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" SOURCE: ABC’s Good Morning America 03/18/03

More from mamma Bush: On 09/0505, while visiting Hurricane Katrina relief centers in Houston, she stated on the NPR program Market place:
"Almost everyone I've talked to says, 'We're gonna move to Houston.' What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas... Everybody is so overwhelmed by the hospitality, and so many of the people in the arenas here, you know, were underprivileged anyway. This is working very well for them."
Some say these were racist comments in reference to the 15,000 evacuees in the Astrodome who were mostly poor and black.

Bush: "There's a certain unease as you head into an election year," Bush said during a wide-ranging news conference that lasted nearly an hour.
Mr. Bush, are you aware that you are unable to seek presidency in 2008? Mr. Bush, are you aware that your former republican friends are just that "former friends" and that many of them are shunning any alignment with you for any hopes of their own political future? In short, Mr. Bush, are you slightly aware that many of your former cronies are hoping their relationships with you, one of the Worse presidents in U.S. history, are forgotten?

BUSH: "Nobody likes war. It creates a sense of uncertainty in the country," he said. "War creates trauma."
Mr. Bush, are you aware that YOU created this trauma for not only the U.S., but also your former allies?

More than 2,300 Americans have died in three years of war in Iraq. Polls show the public's support of the war and Bush himself have dramatically declined in recent months, jeopardizing the political goodwill he carried out of the 2004 re-election victory.
"I'd say I'm spending that capital on the war," Bush quipped.
Mr. Bush good answer! reply(?) Mr. Bush, America is not AT WAR with Iraq, Mr. Bush, it is an invasion. However, please answer me this – how can you account for more than 209,202 victims of the Iraqi INVASION?

When asked about his failed Social Security plan:
Bush simply said: "I didn't get done."
Mr. Bush, you have once stated that you have a "hard job." I applaud you for being so honest. You sound sort of, umm how should I say, wimpy-neurotic, but at least you’re honest. My question is WHEN will you have the time to get the Social Security plan "done"? What will it take for you to actually complete a successful Social Security Plan? Will there be any Social Security left to actually plan for?

But the president defiantly defended his warrantless eavesdropping program, and baited Democrats who suggest that he broke the law.
Calling a censure resolution "needless partisanship," Bush challenged Democrats to go into the November midterm elections in opposition to eavesdropping on suspected terrorists. "They ought to stand up and say, `The tools we're using to protect the American people should not be used,'" Bush said.

Mr. Bush, the Democrats were wrong in regards to your eavesdropping program. You did not break the law; you just merely changed the law so that you were no longer breaking it. Great move on your part, Mr. Bush.
Please forgive this next question, but are you being counterproductive when those same "tools" you use to "protect American people" - an oxy moron when allowing our ports to be managed by foreign countries? In short, Mr. Bush, is that not a slap in the face to the 9/111 victims and their families?

The news conference marked a new push by Bush to confront doubts about his strategy in Iraq. A day earlier, he acknowledged to a sometimes skeptical audience that there was dwindling support for his Iraq policy and that he understood why people were disheartened.
"The terrorists haven't given up. They're tough-minded. They like to kill," he said Tuesday. "There will be more tough fighting ahead."

Mr. Bush, you are so correct, terrorist are indeed tough and are tough-minded. Have you, Mr. Bush looked in the mirror lately?
How many more victims will result due to your acts of violence?

Later in the news conference, Bush was asked whether there would come a day when no U.S. forces are in Iraq.
"That, of course, is an objective. And that will be decided by future presidents and future governments of Iraq," he said.
Asked if that meant it won't happen on his watch, the president said, "You mean a complete withdrawal? That's a timetable. I can only tell you that I will make decisions on force levels based upon what the commanders on the ground say."

This is sad…PATHETIC. Of course, as long as the twins aren’t there, what difference should it make? Mr. Bush, are you anything like Lyndon B. Johnson, during Vietnam? Are you a coward who refuses to admit he has made a mistake, right?
Okay, perhaps that was not a fair remark and/or question. Will the soldiers withdraw through medically evacuations or by death? Are you waiting to hear that there are no more commanders on the ground to hear from?

The president said he did not agree with former interim Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, who told the British Broadcasting Corporation Sunday, "If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is."
Mr. Bush, is this not a clue as to the chaos you have started?
Bush said others inside and outside Iraq think the nation has stopped short of civil war. "There are other voices coming out of Iraq, by the way, other than Mr. Allawi, who I know by the way — like. A good fellow."
Mr. Bush, please be careful with your selection of words as the world IS watching.
"We all recognized that there is violence, that there is sectarian violence. But the way I look at the situation is, the Iraqis looked and decided not to go into civil war."
Mr. Bush, have you, YOU yourself, talked to those so-called Iraqi rebels who are actively fighting other Iraqis?

Are you, Mr. Bush, saying that YOU have actually talked to those on the ground?
Mr. Bush, what I think you may have done here – please forgive me - but you have made an ass-umption as to whether they are fighting a civil war.
Mr. Bush I understand and certainly do realize that you are a C student, so let me give you the definition of "Civil War." Civil War: An internal war between two factions of people within a country; citizens of the same state… the English War, umm "War of the Roses."
I hope that helps.

Bush said he's confident of victory in Iraq. "I'm optimistic we'll succeed. If not, I'd pull our troops out," he said, warning that abandoning the nation would be a dangerous mistake.
Mr. Bush, are you not aware that you have more than 209,202 victims consequent to the Iraqi invasion? Are you aware that you have already passed the point of danger? Alternatively, are you so optimistic and hopeful and relating to the entire story of Pandora’s Box? You do know the complete story don’t you? Well, I certainly am "optimistic."

"So failure in Iraq, which isn't going to happen, would send all kinds of terrible signals to an enemy that wants to hurt us and people who are desperate to change the condition in the broader Middle East," Bush said.
Mr. Bush, who is the enemy that is signaling the people of the U.S. that the real pain is yet to come? Have you completed that Social Security plan as of yet? Is math still "fuzzy math?"
Are you aware that the vast majority of the Middle East was already aware of the problems in an already (previously) troubled country? In addition, are you aware that they knew it would only get worse if an invasion was to occur and are therefore correct in their previous predictions?
Mr. Bush, are you aware that you have made a HUGE DEADY mistake?

Nearly four out of five Americans, including 70 percent of Republicans, believe civil war will break out in Iraq, according to a recent AP-Ipsos poll.

He said he agreed to U.S. talks with Iran to underscore his point that Tehran's attempts to spread sectarian violence or provide support to Iraqi insurgents was unacceptable to the United States.
Mr. Bush, I am tired and gravely disappointed. Did you not provide weapons to those who needed aid in fighting their enemies? Mr. Bush, do you have multiple sclerosis, alzheimer’s or are just forgetful along with the rest of the sheep?
"Productivity is strong. Inflation is contained. Household net worth is at an all-time high," Bush said, crediting his administration's policies.
Mr. Bush, are you referring to here in the U.S., or in Iraq?

On Iraq, Bush bristled at a suggestion that he had wanted to wage war against that country since early in his presidency.
"I didn't want war. To assume I wanted war is just flat wrong ... with all due respect," he told a reporter. "No president wants war." To those who say otherwise, "it's simply not true," Bush said.

Mr. Bush, I honestly believe there are other reasons, but I do feel that the plot to invade Iraq stems from April 14, 1993 and the elder Bush, which is only part of the equation. Again, please refer to the definition of War and Invasion. As well as the meaning of Civil War, "fuzzy math" and "hard work."

Asked about former supporters who now oppose him and the war, Bush said he's trying to win them over by "talking realistically to people" about the war and its importance to the nation.
209,202! Mr. Bush, do I need to say more? How realistic is that? Good luck!

"I can understand how Americans are worried about whether or not we can win," Bush said, adding that most Americans want victory "but they're concerned about whether or not we can win."
Mr. Bush, you should have been a comic! I am not a gambler, but am certainly willing to bet that the those who are against you are not concerned about whether we will win or not. Please, sir, we have already lost! Have you considered the reason(S) you gave as to why we invaded Iraq? Did you not mention it was because of our freedoms?

Mr. Bush, the so-called terrorist who bestowed 9/11 on our Country had nothing to do with Iraq. Even the 9/11 Commission said so. Have you forgotten? Have you forgotten, or do you even care about the wire taps, or better yet the removal of the shoes at the airports? Sir, I ask, are we winning, or have we already lost? (209,202)

Bush scoffed at a question suggesting he should reshuffle or shake up his White House staff to help raise his sagging poll standings. But he did hint that he might bring in an experienced Washington insider to work with a disgruntled Congress.
"I'm not going to announce it right now," Bush said, adding that he's satisfied with the staff he's surrounded himself with.

Mr. Bush, does this have anything to do with increased burdens on taxpayers? Come on now, I’m speaking of the largest foreign military army in Iraq… The mercenaries and private guards. No? Okay, I’m referring to the U.S. government who hired private soldiers to guard officials such as Paul Bremer and who are paid several times the normal military salary which accounts for a large debt to the U.S. taxpayer.

Mr. Bush, are you there?

Demand a Katrina Commission

The Katrina tapes released by the Associated Press once again demonstrate the need for an independent and thorough investigation into the government’s failures surrounding Hurricane Katrina. For months, this Administration and their Republican counterparts in the Senate have consistently rejected calls for any outside investigation into the disaster. Two Republican investigations into Katrina have been completed and two reports have been issued. It is now apparent that both have only scratched the surface. America must learn the truth. We need an Independent Katrina Commission NOW. Please join me by signing this petition:

My Experience With Smut

Google's fate hangs on search ruling (MY Experience)
Feds after Google data

I have just learned TODAY, yes today as to why the government wants Google to turn over its search engine data. I thought it was for other reasons and at the time, I applauded Google for refusing to do so. I could have sworn they said it had something to do with fundamentalists or some other type of stronghold activist.

Could it be that when you type in "Miserable Failure" in Google’s search engine, our faithless leader appears? I do not believe the reason the feds gave for wanting the data, but that’s another story.

Who said its okay to break the law, then change the law so that you’re no longer breaking it?

BUSH: "Do I forget the lessons of September the 11th and take the word of a madman, or do I take action to defend our country? Faced with that choice, I will defend America every time. "
If so, then Mr. President, what about the ports?

All of these oxy morons from a miserable failure of a moron.

Yahoo was one of the first Companies to turn over their data, yet it is comical that Yahoo had an on-line poll in regards to the public’s honesty when it came to filling taxes. I wonder how many clueless folk fell for that one.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
In any event, here is my experience of so-called porn investigation in a Yahoo, MSN or Google search engines. I forget which, but just know that I paid for it - literally.

Well, I wrote a screenplay and needed a poster of attractive men and women. I went to some site that is unknown to me to this very day.

MY DISCLAIMER: I have an illness that effects that peduncle which could lead to Alzheimer’s so I forget as to which site it was. However, if I knew what it was, I would alert everyone so that they would not be caught in the same trap.

Nonetheless, I went to this unknown site in search of possible famous as well as infamous actors and actresses, innocently seeking pretty, attractive faces of both men and women.

During my search, I came across photos of
Jennifer Lewis and Joy
Bryant among a few others. I needed not only Black actors/actress, but White men and women as well. James Remar was one of the picks.

During my search, I saw the likes of Halle Barry and many other beautiful females.

No big deal? At least so I thought.

As I continued my search for just plain ordinary beautiful faces, I came across one site, which lead me to another, then another, and then another. As everyone knows, the search was endless.

Not only did my household chores suffer, but also my behind for sitting on it for so long. Wait, is "
behind" a bad word? Is it too explicit?

The longevity lead me to a site that said something like, 'if you enter this site, you may incur charges'.

I felt it was no big deal, as it had not asked me for a credit card, so I continued.

No big deal.

Some hours later, I ended my search and attempted to tackle my house duties.

No big de
al.

Days passed.
...
(la dee da)
...
Weeks passed.
...

One day, when my spouse finally got the nerve to empty the mailbox, he entered the house with seven handfuls of mail.

Okay, no biggie.

The bills wouldn’t be late and if they were, well, so be it.

My spouse laid the mail on the counter and as always, I sifted and sorted the bills from the junk.

I placed the bills in one pile to be shredded and the junk-mail in a pile to give my money away to unsolicited crap companies.

Still, no biggie.

When I came across the telephone bill, I ceased allowing it to enter the shredder as I knew I would want to blab on it later. Okay, so the phone bill survived file 13.

I opened the phone bill and was prepared to write on the outside envelope what day I might consider mailing it and how much I was willing to pay.

Okay, so wait!

Now, wait just a minute!

One more minute now…

I opened that Qwest telephone bill and good lawd, I nearly had a Fred Sanford heart attack; the bill was one hundred plus dollars!

What?

I freaked.

I thought someone had been charging on my phone without my consent.

I thought some former associates of ours had finally did the deed and jacked ME!

I thought perhaps one of my family members had lost their ever-loving mind and committed an act that would force me to testify against them in court.

One thing I was certain of was that Qwest had made a serious mistake as I was certain that they were mistaken if they thought I’d pay THAT bill! Awww hell to tha naw!

Well, Qwest received their one hundred plus dollars.

You see, the investigation was over: While I was doing my so-called innocent search of beautiful attractive men and women, it just so happens that I entered a porn site. Please!

Now I did NOT see ANY private parts at ALL. I did not see NOT ONE penis and/or vagina, not even a woman’s breast and certainly not a mans bare chest. Everyone I seen was FULLY clothed.

Yep, I was jacked all right, but not by a stranger or, former associate, family member or even the Telephone Company, but by this so called site itself. If they were to have the audacity to charge me, they could have least shown me SOMETHING heck, ANYTHING.

If there is a lesson to be learned, I suppose that I should have sought the local newspapers or thumbing through magazines. However, with the security of buying a Koran or anything else, I feared I would receive an unwelcome knock on my door.

The lesson here, and do hear me good, watch what you search for….
…to all you innocent searchers.

GOOGLE, stand strong!

most likely the last chance I’ll get to speak FREELY

I have lived 30 plus years. I was raised with both parents - one who was very interested in political events. So much so, that by the age of 10, I knew everything or just about most things that was going on, not only in the U.S., but also in every Country and continent. While Barbie was ruling over her small tent, I was able to name most of the rulers, kings, and queens around the world. While I grew up watching Fred Flintstone’s neighbors and his boss, I knew what role Alan Greenspan meant to our Country as well as my dad’s remarks when Nixon was impeached. I recall the people’s republic of China and then leader Xiaoping. In addition, Neil Bush, the director of Silverado Banking, Savings and Loan when it crashed in 1988 at a cost of $1 billion to taxpayers.

Okay, through alllllllll of that, I never, ever,…. Let me repeat NEVER ever knew my civil liberties UNTIL I watched the
Bill Maher show on Friday, March 03, 2006! It is NOW that I KNOW I live in America and have freedom of speech.

With that said, I thank Bill for such a great show and for allowing his guest to speak out and to tell the truth – LIVE on television. I felt like crying, as this new revelation had finally hit me in the noggin! I live in America and I, yes I, have freedom of speech. Lawd!

Oh, and Bill is certainly not alone, and certainly not the first to say that Saddam Hussein should return to power. I said it first. (ha ha) Sad, that not enough people can see the mess our Village Idiot has made in Iraq.

If Saddam Hussein was such a bad leader, then why didn’t the U.S. do something about him in 1963 when he was the interrogator and torturer for the Baath Party or in the 1970’s when he was more lethal? That country was already in turmoil prior to him becoming VP.

While the U.S. did everything in its power to lead the world to believe Saddam would be better removed, then why did the vast majority of the Middle East seem to believe that if Hussein is deposed the country will break into pieces, leading to more problems in the already troubled region? One could hint that the vast majority of these Middle Eastern leaders were correct = they were right and that someone else was wrong.

Prior to hearing Bill Maher "joke"
about returning Saddam Hussein to power, I had already presumed that it would be the best move for the Middle East, the United States and the rest of the world.

I am not an advocator to anyone causing harm to another, but is it not the American way to understand a persons present acts based on ones past? Saddam was beaten and denied education by his step dad. Is this a reason for the crimes he is alleged in committing? I am not a therapist, psychologist or any of the sort, but just an observer of the actions of the people in my Country.

Again, I am NOT a defender of any criminal and certainly NOT Saddam Hussein. However, if someone plots against you, or you fear a person who perhaps may cause bodily harm and you fear for your life, would you not eliminate said person or persons?

I am not the protector of Saddam, but if someone gave me weapons, I would only assume that they would be used to rid myself of my enemies.

With the destruction of Meir Tweig, this proves that Iraq is now at Civil war and because of its fall, we can expect the worse is yet to come.

In short, I wonder where the REAL Saddam is located as it had been reported that he has (had?) many lookalikes. In "his-story" it is claimed that he is 6 feet 2 inches tall, dyes his hair black, walks with a limp and may have had a stroke and/or has disc problems in his back. I suppose, the man I have seen on television who continues to jump up and down in the hall of justice, and poses his body in all shorts of positions, could be Saddam. I’m not sure. As Charles Barkley, says,
‘I could be wrong, but I doubt it.’

I honestly believe there are other reasons, but I do feel that the plot to invade Iraq stems from April 14, 1993 and the elder Bush, which is part of the equation.

I agree with our NEXT president: "This President is a miserable failure!"

Saddam Says Shiites Plotted to Kill Him (By MARIAM FAM, Associated Press Writer)
BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Saddam Hussein was cross-examined for the first time in his 6-month-old trial Wednesday, saying he approved death sentences against Shiites in the 1980s because he believed the evidence had proven they were involved in an assassination attempt against him.

Saddam, standing alone as the sole defendant in the courtroom, dodged some questions from prosecutors over his role in the crackdown, giving long speeches calling the court "illegitimate." He accused the current Shiite-led Interior Ministry of killing and torturing thousands of Iraqis and bickered with chief judge Raouf Abdel-Rahman.
The session came a day after prosecutors indicted Saddam on separate charges of genocide, accusing him of trying to exterminate Kurds in a 1980s campaign that killed an estimated 100,000 people. The charges will be dealt with in a separate trial.
In the current trial, Saddam and seven former members of his regime are charged in a crackdown against Shiites launched after a shooting attack on Saddam's motorcade in the town of Dujail on July 8, 1982. In the sweep that followed, 148 Shiites were killed and hundreds were imprisoned, some of them undergoing torture.
Throughout Wednesday's questioning, Saddam — dressed in a black suit and white shirt — appeared relaxed, frequently shooting grins at chief prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi and even reciting a short bit of poetry to the judge.
Al-Moussawi asked Saddam about his approval for death sentences passed against the 148 by his Revolutionary Court, which prosecutors have argued gave the Shiites only a cursory trial.
"That is one of the duties of the president," Saddam replied. "I had the right to question the judgment. But I was convinced the evidence that was presented was sufficient" to show their guilt in the assassination attempt.
In a previous court session, Saddam acknowledged ordering the trial in which the 148 Shiites were sentenced to death but has maintained his actions were legal because they were in response to the attempt to kill him.
Al-Moussawi asked Saddam if he was aware that 28 of those sentenced to death were under 18 years old and presented identity cards for some of the killed minors. Prosecutors have earlier said an 11-year-old boy was among those killed.
Saddam replied that ID cards can easily be forged.
"There is a clear ulterior motive by those who have given you these documents. You can buy IDs like this in the market," he said. "Is it the responsibility of the head of the state to check the IDs of defendants and see how old he is?"
"I could get ahold of an ID saying Raouf is 25 years old," he added, waving toward the judge.
Al-Moussawi displayed a series of documents that he has previously shown the court — including an approval of medals for intelligence agents involved in the crackdown and approvals for the razing of Dujail farmlands in retaliation for the assassination attempt. Al-Moussawi repeatedly asked if the signatures on the documents were Saddam's.
But Saddam avoided a direct reply, refusing to confirm the signatures but also stopping short of saying the signatures were forged.
"Any comment, matter or document signed by Saddam Hussein, and it has been proven that the handwriting and the signature are his, then I take the responsibility," he replied.
The prosecutors also showed a video they said was taken in the 1980s that showed Saddam talking in an apparent interview about "enemies of the revolution," saying, "I would chop off their heads without one hair of mine shaking. ... As for the ranks of the enemies, if someone died during investigations, he has no value."
The video appeared to be taken from an anti-Saddam film, as the scene of Saddam talking was intercut with scenes of people being beaten. Pressed by the judge, the prosecutor acknowledged that the tape was not directly connected to the Dujail case but insisted it was relevant, asking Saddam what he thought about his comments.
Saddam said they were shown out of context and that he was talking about things "outside the borders" at a time when at war. He dismissed the video as "unrelated to this case."
When defense lawyer Bushra al-Khalil tried to comment on the video, Abdel-Rahman accused her of being out of order and, after an argument, ordered her removed from the courtroom.
At the beginning of the session, Saddam launched into a speech in response to the prosecutor's first question, bringing repeated demands by Abdel-Rahman that he answer the question.
Saddam denounced the court as illegitimate, saying "a body whose base and formation is illegitimate and unjust can't pronounce justice. How could anyone imagine that it could issue a verdict on the Iraqi president, who stood as a sharp spear inside the eyes of those who planned and worked to poke Iraq's eyes?"
He also denounced the current, Shiite-controlled Interior Ministry, calling it a body "that kills thousands people on the streets and tortures them." Some Iraqis accuse the ministry of backing Shiite militias that have assassinated Sunni Arabs in a wave of violence since the Feb. 22 bombing of a Shiite shrine in the city of Samarra.
"Don't venture into political matters," Abdel-Rahman replied.
"If you are scared of the interior minister, he doesn't scare my dog," Saddam retorted.
Saddam had been due to testify and be questioned in the last session of the trial, on March 15. But instead, he gave a rambling speech calling on Iraqis to stop sectarian violence and unite to fight U.S. troops. After arguing with Saddam, Abdel-Rahman closed most of the session to the public to allow Saddam to finish his speech.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Saddam Hussein testified Wednesday for the first time at his trial, and the judge closed the court after the ex-dictator began a speech calling for Iraqis to end sectarian violence and fight American troops instead.

Even as the judge repeatedly yelled at Saddam to stop making what he called political speeches, the deposed leader read from a prepared text, insisting he was still Iraq's president.

"Let the (Iraqi) people unite and resist the invaders and their backers. Don't fight among yourselves," he said, praising the insurgency. "In my eyes, you are the resistance to the American invasion."

Finally, Chief judge Raouf Abdel-Rahman ordered the session closed to the public, telling journalists to leave the chamber. The delayed video feed also was cut.

"The court has decided to turn this into a secret and closed session," he said.

After nearly two hours, reporters were called back into the court, where Saddam sat alone in the defendants' pen before the judge.

The former Iraqi leader then refused to answer questions from the chief prosecutor, demanding to see a copy of his testimony given to investigators before the trial began. Prosecutors agreed and said they would question Saddam in the next session.

Abdel-Rahman then adjourned the trial until April 5.

Saddam was the last of the case's eight defendants to testify. Though he has spoken frequently since the trial began in October, Wednesday's session was to be the first chance for the judge and prosecutors to directly question him on charges of killing 148 Shiites and imprisoning and torturing others during a 1982 crackdown against the Shiite town of Dujail.

Instead, Saddam — dressed in a black suit — read from his statement, insisting he was Iraq's elected president and calling the trial a "comedy."

He addressed the "great Iraqi people" — a phrase he often used in his speeches as president — and urged them to stop the wave of Shiite-Sunni violence that has rocked the country since the Feb. 22 bombing of the Askariya shrine in Samarra.

"What pains me most is what I heard recently about something that aims to harm our people," Saddam said. "My conscience tells me that the great people of Iraq have nothing to do with these acts."

Abdel-Rahman interrupted, saying Saddam was not allowed to give political speeches in the court.

"I am the head of state," Saddam replied.

"You used to be a head of state. You are a defendant now," Abdel-Rahman barked at Saddam.

As Saddam continued reading from a prepared text, the judge repeatedly turned off his microphone to prevent his words from being heard and told him to address the charges against him. But Saddam ignored the judge and continued reading from his text.

"You are being tried in a criminal case. Stop your political speech," Abdel-Rahman said angrily.

"Had it not been for politics I wouldn't be here," Saddam replied.

He went on, urging Iraqis not to fight each other.

"What happened in the last days is bad," he said. "You will live in darkness and rivers of blood for no reason."

He continued: "The bloodshed that they (the Americans) have caused to the Iraqi people only made them more intent and strong to evict the foreigners from their land and liberate their country."

At one point, Abdel-Rahman screamed at him, "Respect yourself!"

Saddam shouted back: "You respect yourself!"

"You are being tried in a criminal case for killing innocent people, not because of your conflict with America," Abdel-Rahman said.

Saddam responded, "What about the innocent people who are dying in Baghdad? I am talking to the Iraqi people."

The stormy session was a stark contrast to the past three hearings, when each of Saddam's seven co-defendants was questioned by Abdel-Rahman and the chief prosecutor.

Saddam and the seven former members of his regime face possible execution by hanging if they are convicted in connection with the crackdown in Dujail following a July 8, 1982, shooting attack on Saddam's motorcade in the town.

Last month, Saddam stood up in court and boldly acknowledged that he ordered the 148 Shiites put on trial before his Revolutionary Court, which eventually sentenced them all to death. But Saddam insisted it was his right to do so since they were suspected in the attempt to kill him.
Before Saddam's testimony, his half brother Barzan Ibrahim — who headed the feared Mukhabarat intelligence agency at the time of the Dujail attack — was questioned for more than three hours by the chief judge and prosecutor.

Chief prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi showed the court a series of Mukhabarat documents on the Dujail case from 1982 and 1983, some of which bore signatures he said were Ibrahim's. One of them was a memo from Ibrahim's office asking Saddam for rewards for six Mukhabarat officers involved in the Dujail crackdown.

"This is not my signature. My signature is easy to forge, and this is forged," Ibrahim said.
He said the same of another document listing Dujail families whose farmlands were razed in retaliation for the shooting. Another document, signed by an assistant to Ibrahim, talked about hundreds of Dujail detainees being held at Mukhabarat headquarters and the notorious
Abu Ghraib prison.

Ibrahim said that memo as well was forged.

At the end of Wednesday's session, Abdel-Rahman ordered forensic tests on the signatures to determine their veracity.

In previous sessions, Dujail residents testified that Ibrahim participated in torturing them at Mukhabarat headquarters. One woman claimed Ibrahim kicked her in the chest while she was hung upside down and naked by her interrogators.

But Ibrahim insisted the Mukhabarat was not involved in the investigation into the attack on Saddam and denied any personal role in the crackdown.

"I didn't order any detentions. I didn't interrogate anyone," he said, adding that he resigned from the Mukhabarat in August 1983. "There is not a single document showing that I was involved in the investigation."

Ibrahim insisted that the General Security agency carried out the Dujail crackdown. He said his only involvement came on the day of the shooting, when he went to the village and ordered security officials to release Dujail residents who had been arrested.

The defense has argued that Saddam's government acted within its rights to respond after the assassination attempt on the former Iraqi leader.

The prosecutor has sought to show that the crackdown went well beyond the authors of the attack to punish Dujail's civilian population, saying entire families were arrested and tortured and that the 148 people killed were sentenced to death without a proper trial.

Woman Finds 'Psycho, Crazy!!' Comments On Prescription

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A Palm Beach, Fla., woman is suing Walgreens.
Janey Karp said that when she picked up a prescription she found an extra message attached in the section reserved for patient information -- "CrAzY!!"
The 53-year-old also said the prescription she picked up last week for the sleep aid Ambien also said, "She's really a psycho!!! Do not say her name too loud, never mention her meds by names & try to talk to her when ... " The information continued onto another page but was not attached.
"I was devastated, humiliated and embarrassed," Karp said. "I honestly couldn't speak. I was trembling."
Karp is suing the retail chain for defamation, negligent supervision and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Karp told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that when she lived in Connecticut, she asked Walgreens employees there to be discreet when discussing her medications. She told the paper that the pharmacy workers would often call her name loudly and talk openly about her medications.
A spokeswoman for the Illinois-based chain said the incident is being investigated.
"The Drug Utilization Review (DUR) includes a notes field intended for the pharmacist to use to enter reminders and patient requests," company spokeswoman Carol Hively said. "We want to ensure that our pharmacy employees are acting in a proper and professional manner so we are looking into this matter."
She said the notes field is intended for internal use as a private reminder for the pharmacist
The newspaper reported Karp said that when she was younger, she self-medicated herself with alcohol and drugs.
She was sober for eight years before relapsing and is nearing the two-year mark of being sober again, according to the paper. Karp said that after the incident, she struggles to sleep and is worried.
"I'm thinking they're thinking here comes psycho, that they're laughing at me as I come in the store," she said. "I had enough trouble picking these [medications] up in the first place."
Karp's attorney, Cathy Lively, said her client is not psychotic nor insane, but the inference is there.
Lively told the paper that countless other Walgreens customers could unknowingly have the same types of notes in their accounts as Karp.
"There (are) a lot of medications with stigmas and sensitivities," Lively said. "A man taking Viagra, what are they going to be labeled? Do you want slanderous, derogatory comments put in the system?"

Unusual Wal-Mart News

Wal-Mart In Court Fight Over 'Wal-ocaust' T-Shirts

ATLANTA -- A Georgia man has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart in federal district court in Atlanta in a fight over his T-shirts that compare the retailer's business practices to the Holocaust.

Charles Smith has been marketing shirts that read, "I (heart) Wal-ocaust" T-shirts. Wal-Mart filed a cease-and-desist order in an attempt to make him stop printing the shirts.

The company said Smith is engaging in trademark infringement. It has threatened to sue Smith if he continues to display the logos on his

The 48-year-old Smith is a computer repairman and said he has no deep connection to the company. But he claims using the logos is a free speech issue.

Smith said he came up with his anti-Wal-Mart logo after conversations with a customer and an employee who both had bad experiences with the retailer.
He designed his first logo in July. One shirt -- with "Wal-ocaust" printed above an eagle and a smiley face sold on Nov. 16 and netted Smith $5.10.
He said if the court sides with him, he will use any profits to pay his legal fees and for continued production of the products.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sarah Clark said Smith is infringing on the company's trademark and also "making an offensive association between Wal-Mart and one of the greatest tragedies of the past century."

Families trade races for 'Black. White.'

A very interesting .

I heard about this documentary on the news about a week or so ago, and greatly desired to see an African American transformed into a different race and vice versa. And after viewing the results for myself, all I can say is WOW! Unbelievable! Moreover, whoever the makeup artist, is just that, a very talented artist.

I find this to be a very important investigative documentary as I believe it will help bring light to non-minorities. While many critics – both Black and White – will argue that this does not prove much and that the study has been already made, I believe, that as long as racism is alive, so should investigations such as these. I dread to sound infantile, but as long as THEY keep it alive, then so those who suffer many injustices.

I am so sure that this documentary will be viewed by many and as time permits, will be begging for more investigations that are similar. I look forward to see how different races interact with realtors and the like.

Again, I am very pleased to see something SO positive, enlightening as well as IMPORTANT.

Families trade races for 'Black. White.'
With help of special makeup, two families live in the other's skin for provocative FX series
Two well-dressed black men were walking in Beverly Hills' shopping district when a white woman approached them. As she walked closer, the woman clutched her purse and moved to the edge of the sidewalk as the two men passed going the other way.
Discussing the incident later, one of the men contended she was making a racist presumption that they might harm her. The other said she was just yielding space because the men were taking up more than their share of the sidewalk.
The reason for their different views could be because the second man is not really black, but a white man in black makeup. Brian Sparks, a black computer networks specialist from Atlanta, and Bruno Marcotulli, a white teacher from Santa Monica, and their families are the subjects of "Black. White.," a new documentary series that explores racial issues among individuals who see themselves as unbiased and honest.
Brian, 41, perceives racism in small gestures, while Bruno, 47, argues that Brian is hypersensitive because of his past experiences.
"You see what you want to see," Bruno says to Brian at the end of that first episode, airing Wednesday on FX.
"And you don't see what you don't want to see," Brian replies.
Filmmaker R.J. Cutler put together the Sparks family (Brian, Renee and son Nick) and the Wurgel family (Carmen Wurgel, Bruno Marcotulli and Carmen's daughter, Rose Bloomfield) in a house in Tarzana, Calif., for six weeks last summer. Sometimes they were sent out in public expertly made up as the opposite race, and other times they kept the cameras rolling at home as they talked about their experiences, views and misconceptions in their natural states.
"It's as much a critique about liberal points of view as anything else," Cutler says in an interview. "I wasn't interested in the white 'cracker' who doesn't like black people. I wasn't interested in the militant African-American who can't stand whitey. I was interested in what ... your basic American progressive, open-minded, open-hearted man and woman think about race. That's an issue worth exploring because that's as broken as anything else."
As part of the series, Rose enrolled in a Hollywood poetry slam class with unsuspecting urban black teens. Asked to name their favorite entertainers, the young poets around her cited Prince, Michael Jackson and Mary J. Blige. Rose chimed in with the Cranberries -- then immediately regretted it. The black teens read from tattered notebooks their own words about gunfire, pain, death and loss. Rose flipped open a laptop and read from the screen her polysyllabic opus on sex and love.
"I came into this estranged from my own issues with racism because I never thought about it," says Rose, 18, who graduated last spring from Santa Monica High School. "Then I'm reading 'Black Like Me' in my makeup chair, and I'm overwhelmed."
She learned to adapt, befriending some kids at the slam and then shocking them later when she revealed her secret. (They soon forgave her for the deception, and she's still friends with several participants.)
During production, Rose had to conceal from her boyfriend and close friends what she was really up to; they just knew she was working on a documentary. She craved the company of people her own age, but Nick, 17, was too withdrawn to fill that void for her.
"This makes it actually worth it," Rose says after a screening and frank panel discussion at 20th Century Fox last week. "For the first time, I can share and talk about it. That's what's so cool. People want to talk about it."
The makeup process -- layers of multiple colors sprayed on all exposed skin followed by contact lenses and wigs -- took up to five hours to apply and two hours to remove, so the Sparks' and the Wurgels' public experiences were limited and carefully planned.
"We suspected from the very beginning that the core of the show was going to be their relationships," Cutler says.
And it was. Tension was palpable between Renee, 38, and Carmen, 48, stemming from Renee's impatience with Carmen's naivete and public mistakes. Bruno threw around the N-word with a carelessness that set Renee and Brian on edge, and Nick got fed up with Rose's inquisitive nature, which he saw as prying.
Eight months later, it's still very much about their relationships. During the panel discussion, Bruno, the son of Italian immigrants, said he'd been taught that immigrants or minorities must pull themselves up by their bootstraps and learn how to make it in a nation of equal opportunity. He echoed some sentiments he voiced to TV reporters in January: It's up to you to make your life what you want it to be, and blaming others for your situation is fruitless.
Brian silently shook his head at Bruno's remarks, prompting some chuckles from the racially mixed audience.
Rapper, actor and producer Ice Cube, who executive produced "Black. White." with Cutler, rejects Bruno's suggestion that "individual responsibility" was the answer.
"We have been the victims for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years of government-sponsored racism, government-sanctioned racism, institutional racism," he says. "It's not just 'be yourself and everything's going to be all right.' "
Some of their experiences in public as the opposite race were more profound than others.
One day, Brian ventured into a white country club, discussing golf club choices easily with a member and then secretly thrilling as a salesman in the pro shop not only brought him a shoe he requested, but slipped it on his foot with a shoehorn. That act of civility, he says, had never been extended to him before.
As a white man, he also took a job bartending at a neighborhood joint in La Crescenta. He casually asked one customer to tell him about the area, and the man easily volunteered that it was one of the last white areas of Los Angeles -- and the locals want to keep it that way.
Carmen and Bruno faced the heat of going out as an interracial couple -- Carmen in her own skin and Bruno in makeup -- one afternoon in Leimert Park. And Nick mingled uneasily with well-to-do white kids at a Beverly Hills etiquette class.
"I don't think we ever can understand anyone else's life completely, period," Carmen says. "But a willingness to truly enter into the possibility of understanding it is amazing in itself. And I got a window, just a peek, into a world that I never had access to, and it was a privilege and it was life-changing, and I just appreciate that."
Ice Cube says the show's ultimate lesson is in celebrating people's differences rather than worrying about them.
"Nobody should want the world to all be the same. And that's really what the show is bringing out, dealing with the ills that face us every day, the cancer of racism that faces America every day, and two families dealing with it. Trying to teach each other about it, trying to learn about each other. And that's not always pretty, but it's definitely always interesting, provocative and definitely gets us talking about it."
He says viewers likely will hope the Wurgel and Sparks families become good friends, but that was not the producers' goal.
"What I wanted people to recognize is that racism is in all of us, in layers. Some in more layers than others," Ice Cube says. "It's not just the Klan guy and the black-fist guy, and it's about peeling away those layers."
At the Fox panel discussion, each was asked if they had a prayer, what would it be?
"My prayer is that each of us look inside our own hearts," Carmen said. "It takes a willingness to pause before we make an assumption. I think all this erupts because we don't wait -- we react. And the willingness to have empathy and just imagine what it would be like to be in someone else's skin -- that's my prayer."
Brian said: "When you meet someone, instead of meeting them with your eyes open and your mind closed, meet them with your eyes closed and your mind open. I think you'll have a different experience."
